In 2021, the Street Vendor Project (SVP) launched the Environmental Justice for Vendors, by Vendors Project to reimagine a greener and more just vending economy for over 20,000 vendors in New York City.

Currently, most vendors use gasoline-powered generators to power their carts. (the most commonly used generator, Honda EU2000i, pictured left). These generators emit pollutants that negatively impact both the environment and vendor health, yet vendors lack clear and affordable alternative technologies to reduce these emissions.
We are hosting a competitive design process to design, build, and ensure access to more environmentally sustainable and healthy vending technology. Our goals are to reduce the environmental footprint of vending while also helping the financial bottom line of New York City’s food carts and trucks. We are actively looking for vendors, cart manufacturers, technical support partners, and funders to join our work.
